The Gift of Hugs … renewal of life

Hugs are getting a lot of press today, for good reasons: Love, Happiness, Hope, Health, Purpose and Quality of Life.

Science has shown that we need a minimum of:

  •   four hugs daily just for survival
  •

  •   eight hugs for emotional stability and
  •

  •   twelve hugs for personal growth
  •
A hug in this context is defined as an embrace, a kind word, a touch, a loving smile. Caring hugs also help you relax, lower your blood pressure and help you face stressful situations more calmly.

Hugs are becoming recognized as being so important that there are many organizations around the world taking hugs to the streets, to adult retirement communities, to hospitals and even declaring Hug Holidays.

Neighbor Hugs for Camaraderie and Feeling Connected

The Neighbor Hug:  The neighbor invited for the spontaneous back yard barbeque delivers a salad, a cheerful smile and arms which envelop your shoulders with a bright hello.

    Family Hugs

Aunt Hugs:  Most families have an offbeat aunt.  For the teenage boy, those Aunt Hugs can be torturous, his eyes scrunched closed, hoping nobody witnesses his embarrassment.

Grandparent Hugs:  A toddler associates Grandma or Grandpa Hugs with love, warmth, good smells, laughter and great story telling.

Sister Hugs are rainbows in the storm or harmony to your laughter.  Long, strong, soulful, understanding hugs, letting you know you are loved, accepted, not alone.  Sister Hugs add sanity and hope to your life.

Father Hugs are heart and esteem builders.  Dad’s “I’m Proud of You” hug for his precious daughter … or his arm-around-the-shoulder of his gallant son … encourage you to walk taller and more confidently.

Mother Hugs of understanding and compassion enfold you in a warm, gentle haven of nurturing or an oasis of joy as she listens, then cheers or comforts.  Mother Hugs mend or delight, making your world a sunnier space.

Children’s Hugs are the priceless treasures!  They are given unconditionally, with infectious laughter, tears or joy. Hugs of Children are spontaneous, loving, accepting, heart-giving, heart-rending and heart-mending … creating precious life-long memories.

    Party and Social Hugs:

The Woman’s Party Hug is quick and efficient with air kisses completing the ritual.  Timeworn party praise with practiced smiles flow automatically while thoughts focus on appearance and social acceptance.

The Pretty Woman Hug is the male fantasy of embracing the body of a responsive curvaceous coquette with endlessly long, shapely legs.

The Dance Floor Hug: subtle at the Ritz, not so subtle at Charlie’s Bar; those mutual body-language explorations hoping for an after-party party.

Rather than hugging, men give slaps on the back, high-fives, knuckle-thumb-hand codes, friendly “who is stronger” handshakes or an occasional shoulder squeeze.

    Friend and Friendlier Hugs:

The Congratulations Hug amongst women is accompanied by squeals of laughter, jumping up and down, and everybody talking at once … toasted with a glass of wine.

Men congratulate with a back-slap, fraternal hand codes, a friendly pulled one-two punch, or with a jumping high-five in sports … toasted with a bottle of beer.

The Best of Friends Hug is accompanied with great smiles, laughter and warm arms wrapped securely, heart-to-heart.  The day becomes brighter.

The Compassionate Hug heals and nurtures.  Arms grow long enough to wrap around you three times, enveloping you in a safe zone, head against shoulder.  Snuggles encouraged.

Attraction Hugs are warmer, softer, longer, tentative, teasing … heightened by throaty purrs.  The day – or night – just took on a sensual glow.

Lover’s Hugs are long, sultry slow … with rapturous sighs.  A Lover’s Hug fills the heart, enhances the libido, and heightens the senses; all dreams are possible.

Hugs, kind words, a warm touch, a loving smile . . . all nurture and heal.  With Hugs our spirit is awakened, our heart fills, hope abounds; the world looks brighter. Days fill with purpose. These heart-full expressions of giving and receiving are absolutely essential to our well-being.

If you aren’t getting enough Hugs . . . give them away.  They don’t cost you anything but they are so precious and priceless that they can raise another from the depths of despair.  Being a Hugs Messenger is the best way to begin receiving and exceeding your daily quota of hugs.

    Happy Hugging!
